How to get rid of oily skin?

Oily skin can result from the overproduction of sebum by the skin’s glands. To address this, various at-home remedies, lifestyle alterations, and clinical interventions may be employed in order to reduce its visibility or eliminate it altogether.

Many individuals struggle with excessively oily skin, which may lead to various skin conditions.

1. Cleansing regularly

It is essential to properly maintain clean and healthy skin by washing the face daily with a gentle, pH-balanced nonsoap cleanser both in the morning and evening.

For optimal results, individuals may benefit from selecting gentle face washes rather than those that contain harsher ingredients. This is because stronger products can stimulate additional oil production, potentially causing skin irritation.

2. Limiting alcohol use

Chronic alcohol consumption can have detrimental effects on the blood vessels. These effects may manifest as an enlargement of the skin’s pores due to increased size of both the blood vessels and the oil glands.

It has been suggested that people with oily skin may experience benefits from reducing their alcohol consumption.

3. Using salicylic acid products

Regular exfoliation, utilizing a chemical-based exfoliator such as salicylic acid on a weekly basis, can be beneficial for removing dead skin cells, oil, and other impurities from the skin’s surface.

For optimal results, it is recommended to apply exfoliating products using gentle, small circular motions for approximately 30 seconds or less with warm water.

4. Using blotting papers or medicated pads

Absorbing excess oil from the skin’s surface can typically be accomplished through the use of blotting papers and medicated pads.

It is recommended that individuals lightly press blotting papers or pads against their skin for a few seconds. For optimal results, it is best to use a fresh piece of paper or pad when the initially used one has become filled with oil or debris.

5. Moisturizing regularly

There has been some concern that moisturizers will lead to an increase in the production of oil on the skin or clog pores. However, oil-free and noncomedogenic moisturizers help to keep the skin hydrated without any adverse effects.

For individuals with especially oily skin, night-time moisturizing can be improved by switching from a heavier formula such as a cream to a lighter option like a serum or gel.

6. Making a facial mask

Due to limited scientific evidence, many people have turned to natural or herbal products in an attempt to reduce excessive skin oil production. Homemade facial masks can be crafted to incorporate some of these products for potentially beneficial effects.

Recent research has identified clay and parsley masks as two of the most effective and commonly recommended treatments for reducing oily skin.

Green clay is well-known for its various cosmetic applications, including the absorption and removal of dirt, debris, and oil from the surface of the skin.

Parsley is rich in vitamins and minerals that can help regulate sebum production and absorption. Masks formulated with approximately 4% parsley powder have been reported to be effective in controlling excess oiliness.

7. Making dietary changes

The American Academy of Dermatology has indicated that high-glycemic foods and beverages may contribute to inflammation and increased sebum production, as they have the potential to cause rapid increases in blood sugar levels.

People with oily skin should aim to incorporate low glycemic foods into their diet, such as:

  • Freshest vegetables
  • Some fresh fruits
  • Pulses and legumes
  • Whole grain oats and cereals

Cow’s milk has a high glycemic index, which can lead to inflammatory pathways and clogged pores that result in acne.

8. Reducing stress

Stress can trigger the release of hormones, such as cortisol, which are known to contribute to the production of sebum.

It has been found that reducing stress levels can lead to a lower production of oil in the skin. If a person wishes to reduce their stress, they may want to try techniques such as:

  • Yoga
  • Meditation
  • Avoiding nicotine or alcohol
  • Sleeping well
  • Exercising regularly
  • Staying hydrated

9. Using mineral and setting powders

Oil-free and water- or mineral-based makeup products are less likely to obstruct the pores, as compared to oil-containing cosmetics. Setting powders that do not contain talc can also be effective in absorbing any excess facial oils.

10. Removing makeup before going to bed

Failing to remove makeup before sleeping may result in clogged pores and skin irritation.

It is recommended that makeup be removed before bed using a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser. To ensure effective cleansing and to avoid damaging skin, the face should be gently patted dry with a clean cloth rather than scrubbed.

Why does skin become oily?

The sebaceous glands are microscopic structures located on all areas of the skin, excluding the palms and soles of the feet.

The sebaceous glands produce sebum, an oily substance that acts as a barrier to protect the skin. When an excess of sebum is produced, it can lead to increased oiliness of the skin and can mix with other debris and dead skin cells, which may block pores resulting in the development of skin conditions such as acne. Many variables contribute to skin becoming oily, but much of it can be attributed to an individual’s biology. Genetics and age can both have an effect on the amount of oil present in the skin; if oily skin is found in one’s family tree, they may experience the same. Youthful skin, especially during teenage years, tends to contain more oil than mature skin.

External factors such as environmental conditions may contribute to or worsen oily skin. Additionally, the type of skincare products used can also play an important role in oil production; heaviness of the products or those which deprive the skin of its natural oils may result in excessive oil production. While it may not be feasible to eliminate oily skin entirely, when taking particular skincare and lifestyle measures into account, you can manage its effects.

Preventing oily skin

When oily skin is caused by genetic predisposition or hormonal fluctuations, it can be difficult to prevent. However, establishing a consistent skincare regime and avoiding unhealthful foods such as fried items, those with high sugar content, and processed goods may prove beneficial in managing oil production.

The use of heavy cosmetics to cover up the effects of oily skin may be tempting, however, this can further worsen the condition. It is highly recommended to reduce the usage of makeup, especially foundation, when the signs of oily skin present themselves. It is recommended to select water-based products instead of oil-based ones. To further protect your skin from clogged pores, look for items labeled “noncomedogenic” on their packaging.

It is widely purported that home remedies for oily skin can be effective; however, most have not been adequately researched. Whether a home remedy proves to be successful or not may vary depending on individual factors and the quality of ingredients used.

It is possible to develop an allergic reaction to products you have been using for a period of time. If your skin becomes sensitive to any product, it is recommended to discontinue use immediately.

If a home remedy worsens your symptoms, it is advised to discontinue usage and contact a medical professional. Additionally, if your oily skin symptoms such as acne are severe, immediate medical assistance is recommended, as this can result in infection or scarring.
